Pasé la mañana en la "Aldeíta", en la casa del Padre Gabriel Rodríguez, donde tenemos los cuatro seminaristas de cuarto año de Teología, haciendo su año de diaconía. Tuvimos una reunión muy interesante en la que me presentaron su proyecto de experiencias espirituales, pastorales y académicas. Será un año en que estos jóvenes, que interrumpen sus estudios normales, van a enriquecerse con una gran experiencia y no dejarán su hábito de estudio, ni mucho menos su formación espiritual. Los ví muy contentos y al Padre también muy optimista. Fuimos, después de la reunión, a celebrar una Eucaristía en la Iglesia de Aldeíta con una comunidad que llenaba la pequeña Iglesia con un cariño muy grade, una fe que se nota muy viva. Se conoce que el Padre Gabriel y, ahora los cuatro seminaristas, trabajan intensamente esta comunidad de fe.

Al regresar, tuve la reunión con la Comisión Ecuménica de ayuda humanitaria para esclarecer las relaciones con Cáritas y con el Comité de Emergencia del Arzobispado. No queremos multiplicar ni complicar el trabajo por la caridad, sino coordinar todos los esfuerzos, las iniciativas que nacen para el servicio del prójimo. Considero que, toda esta actividad, dará un sentido de verdadera educación en el amor a esta comunidad de la Arquidiócesis. Trataremos de hacer la bodega de Cáritas, junto con su oficina, en el local donde está el Centro Universitario y trataremos también de que la junta arquidiocesana de Cáritas se incorpore plenamente a este trabajo coordinado de la caridad y de la beneficiencia.

Por la noche, vino el reverendo Monseñor de Suecia que trae el Premio de la Paz 1980, que me fue conferido y que se entregará el próximo domingo. Tuvimos una larga conversación en que él me explicaba cómo era la vida religiosa en su país, la Iglesia Luterana es la oficial del país, mientras que todas las demás, incluyendo la Católica, se llaman Iglesias libres, y han organizado un Secretariado Ecuménico, es éste el que me ha escogido junto con la Iglesia de la Arquidiócesis para galardonarme con el Premio de la Paz de 1980. Me dijo que al pedir el consentimiento del Ministerio del Culto, se mostró muy complacido, y que dijo de que, "para Monseñor Romero y para la Diócesis de San Salvador, todo lo que quisieran de Suecia". Así, expresó también que estaría presente en este homenaje de su patria el señor embajador ante El Salvador y Guatemala. También me dijo que la Iglesia Católica, que es una proporción muy pequeña de Suecia, con un Obispo alemán, donde hay también muchos inmigrantes latinoamericanos, se sintieron muy complacidos de esta elección e hicieron una colecta para ayudar a los necesitados
de esta Diócesis y que él traía ese aporte que significa mucho sacrificio y mucho cariño de los católicos de su país. Para el próximo domingo tenemos un ceremonial, para que, durante la Misa se haga entrega de este premio que significará también un estímulo para toda la comunidad.

Tuve también una conversación con un periodista inglés, con el cual conversamos acerca de la situación del país y la misión de la Iglesia en este momento tan difícil en que las reformas sociales y económicas parecen que hacen un gran bien al pueblo y, sin embargo, puede ser una pantalla para disimular la verdadera intención represiva que se sigue muy cruel en nuestro pueblo. Creo que para la Iglesia es un momento muy difícil de discernimiento, pero cuento con la luz del Espíritu Santo, que espero no me ha de fallar para orientar a mi comunidad Eclesial. También el traductor del reverendo de Suecia, quiso tener una entrevista conmigo, él es luterano y trabaja en la embajada sueca de Guatemala, y tomará parte en la ceremonia del próximo domingo. Finalmente, una breve entrevista con el Señor Ernesto Rivas Gallont, acerca del secuestro del señor Dunn, que parece que se complica; desde luego que, la colecta en Sud Africa fue un fracaso y no se puede ofrecer, por la liberación del señor Dunn, una cantidad considerable. El ha sido llamado a Washington para hablar allá con el embajador de Sud Africa y ver cómo se plantea de nuevo este grave problema. Yo prometí, como mediador, hacer lo que pueda, pero veo bastante difícil esta situación. Que el señor nos ayude a salvar esta vida y a que la Iglesia haga valer su servicio en nombre de Jesucristo para salvar la libertad del señor Dunn.

I spent the morning in the Aldeita, Father Gabriel Rodriguez's house, where we have the four seminarians who are in the fourth year of theology doing their year of diaconate. We had a very interesting meeting in which they presented to me their project for spiritual, pastoral and academic experiences. It would be a year in which
these young people would interrupt their regular studies and enrich themselves with a great experience but would not get out of the habit of study or neglect their spiritual formation. I saw that they were very happyand that Father Gabriel was also very optimistic.

After this meeting, we went to celebrate the Eucharist in the church of Aldeita with a community that filled the small church with great affection, with a faith I could see was quite vital. We know that Father Gabriel, and now the four seminarians, work intensely with this community of faith.

When I returned, I had a meeting with the ecumenical committee on humanitarian aid to clarify its relationship with Caritas and with the emergency committee of the archdiocese. We do not want to multiply or complicate the charitable work but rather to coordinate all the efforts, the initiatives for the service of our neighbor. I believe that all ofthis activity will then show a true example of love to this community of the archdiocese. We will try to build a warehouse for Caritas, along with an office, on the land where the university center is located. We will also try to get the arch diocesan Caritas board to become a full participant in this coordinated effort for charity and beneficence.

In the evening the reverend bishop from Sweden came. He is bringing me the 1980 Peace Prize that was awarded to me and will be given to me next Sunday. We had a long conversation in which he explained to me what the religious life is like in his country. The Lutheran Church is the official Church ofthe country, while all the others, including the Catholic Church, are called "free Churches." They have organized an ecumenical office, and it is they who have chosen me along with the Church of the archdiocese to be honored with the 1980 Peace Prize.

He told me that when he asked the consent of the ministry for religious affairs, they were very pleased and said that "for Archbishop Romero and for the diocese of San Salvador, anything they want from Sweden." He told me that the ambassador of his country in El Salvador and Guatemala would be present at this tribute. He also told me that the Catholic Church, which is a very small minority in Sweden, with a German bishop and many Latin American immigrants, felt very pleased by this choice and took up a collection to help the needy in our diocese. He has brought this
contribution, which represents much sacrifice and great affection on the part of the Catholics of his country. Next Sunday we will have a ceremony during the Mass. They will award this prize, which is also a stimulus for the entire community.

I also had a conversation with an English journalist. We talked about the situation of the country and the mission of the Church in such a difficult moment, in which the social and economic reforms seem to mean great good for the people, but nevertheless can be a screen to hide the true repressive intention that continues to be very cruel toward our people. I think that this is a very difficult moment for discernment for the Church, but I rely on the light of the Holy Spirit who, I hope, will not fail me in guiding my ecclesial community.

Also, the translator for the minister from Sweden wanted to have a meeting with me. He is Lutheran; he works in the Swedish embassy in Guatemala and will take part in the ceremony next Sunday.

Finally, a brief interview with Mr. Ernesto Rivas Gallont about the kidnapping of Mr. Dunn, which seems to have gotten more complicated. It is clear that the collecting of funds in South Africa is a failure, and they cannot offer a large sum for the freedom of Mr. Dunn. Mr. Gallont has been called to Washington to talk there with the South African ambassador and see if they can find a new way to deal with this serious problem. I promised, as mediator, to do what I can, but I see it is a very grave situation. May the Lord help us to save this life and help the Church to make its service useful in the name of Jesus Christ in order to obtain the liberty of Mr. Dunn.
